Akai IPK25+Synthstudio, Super Cool iPhone Accessory

Akai showed this little gizmo, a two-octave keyboard controller/iPod doc compatible with iPhone and iPod Touch with included Synthstudio music creation software. A very nifty way to create music on the go indeed. The best news is it's only $99. Ships in May.

Free nifty thumb drive thingee with APC40

With Akai's hotly anticipated APC40 dedicated Ableton Live control surface scheduled to hit end of May, Numark-kai-lesis are stoking the fires of anticipation by offering this dandy USB drive with first 20 audioMIDI.com pre-orders (BTW, pre-ordering is the good plan if you want one, because they're gonna sell out like nuts, we don't charge your credit card until your order ships and you can change your mind at any time between now and then). I just shoved one in my computer and realized it's only 1GB, but they are rubbery and cool and advertise that you're a forward-thinking Ableton Live-type. Comes in a swell metal tin... I won't make any suggestions as to what you should use THAT for, because this is like, a "family" blog.

Musikmesse faux report:It's a MINIAK, MINIAK...

Here we gots the Akai MINIAK. I can only imagine the product devlopement meeting that spawned it: "Well Clint, the situation seems to be that those damn Korg guys are beating the pants off us in the little-plasticky-three-octave-synth-with-a-vocoder-with-a-mic-sticking-out-of-it product segment. What can be done?" "Could we kill them? Y'know, just murder them in their sleep?" "That really went amok the last time we pulled that caper..." "How about we innovate! Make something bold and original just like when we started using them glass-ferrite epitaxial tape heads or when we hired the Brit to make us a sampler! Remember that? Ah, those were the days Chuck." "Sure were. But hey, forget all that, let's just make something JUST LIKE that Korg thingie, huh?" "The I's have it? Meeting adjourned."

Blowin' in the wind

post by Mitchell Sigman (president/North American Kenny G Fanclub) I have to admit, I've never been much of a wind instrument guy- my sole experience with the woodwind and brass sector amounts to a couple of unsuccessful attempts at playing "Who Can It Be Now" on my buddy's alto sax circa-seventh grade. But I've always found the idea of synth wind controllers kind of neat (as long as they weren't playing smooth jazz). Traditionally, they've been a pricey item, but now, today, hey heck it's good to be alive, Akai has bestowed the EWI USB wind controller upon us for a breezy $299 (get it? breezy?!?). Initially, I expected some kind of glorified MIDI melodica, but it's actually got a pretty impressive feature set- plug and play USB with Mac/PC, fingering modes for sax, flute, oboe, EVI brass or "traditional" EWI (i.e. EWI predecessors). And they toss in software with 75 sound sets, so it's ready to, uh, rock? Blow? Wail? Not sure what the proper nomenclature is for giddily playing this type of instrument is, but it's easy and affordable. I gotta go download an MP3 of "Careless Whisper" (btw, you wouldn't believe the number of hysterical Wham! pics one finds with Yahoo image search).
