RME Babyface (L.A. Reid Not Included)

This swift little guy seems to be positioned to out-Duet Apogee's class-dominating wee audio interface. It's a 24 bit/192kHz handheld audio interface with stereo analog I/O (w/mic pres), one ADAT I/O, phones out, bus power and "TotalMix" DSP mixer with FX. Yowsa that, sir.

Turn it up to, well... Digidesign Eleven Rack

In the "really?" category, Digidesign has just dropped Eleven Rack, which basically takes their Eleven guitar modeling plug in and puts it in a Pod Pro-esque two-space rack case incorporating a 2-in/2-out Pro Tools LE-compatible USB audio interface and a front panel XLR mic in with phantom power.

There's just ten amp models, seven cabs, seven mics and 16 effects, but for me, that's fine (I use exactly three amp models of the roughly 497 models on my Line 6 Flextone, and I suspect most serious musicians are the same). The other nice thing is that the presets actually sound like amps, as opposed to the mega-effected swooshathon so commonly experienced in rack boxes of this ilk. I'm as picky as they come, and I was ready to hate it, but it really does sound great. Additional, it allows you to record dry guitar and amp tones simultaneously in case you're into the reamping thing. This could be really cool if you want play like you would through an amp, then pipe it out to a real mic'd amp setup at a later date.

Nice job guys... we should have a review up next week. In the meantime, check it out.

It's One, but it's not the same...

Those Apogee folks are good at keeping things under wraps- this is Apogee's One. Here we have the pristine fidelity of Apogee Audio in a tiny USB one-in/two-out Apple Core Audio-compatible package plus an audiophile-quality built-in mic for perfect demos or podcasting on-zee-go (word has Bob Clearmountain personally tweaked the" Tuned Aperture Microphone™"). It's REALLY small, like the size of a cell phone, and we're gonna throw together a quick vid real soon.

Shipping late July... pre-order HERE.

Cakewalk V-Studio 100... don't be thrown by the catchy name

Just wanted to give holla' yo (ironic inflection doesn't come across well on the interwebs) to the new Cakewalk V-Studio 100. I'm not a PC or a Cakewalk guy, but it really is an impressive little box of audio toolkit. In addition to being a six analog in/out+SP/DIF digital I/O USB audio interface, it's got two mic pres, a motorized a fader, a knobs/buttons control control surface for Sonar... it can also act as a standalone mixer with reverb and compressors and, get this, it's a two-channel SD card audio recorder with files transferable to the host computer via USB. Admittedly not the kind of thing I usually get all frothy about, but if you're a Sonar-type, this is a pretty darn handy box.

Here's a video of really British guy Alan Branch talking about it:

NAMM '09- IK gets even Stealthier...

Following the success of their Stealth inline guitar plug USB audio interface, IK Multimedia showed their Stealth Pedal, a USB bus-powered guitar audio interface packaged inside a sturdy metal pedal resembling a classic wah pedal. But don't let its guitar-pedal appearance fool ya... in addition to accepting to hi-z guitar level signals, it actually features two line-level ins and outs, so it can function as a standard stereo audio interface. IK also gives us a headphone jack and Amplitube Live 2 guitar modeling software. Oh yeah, and that "wah pedal" is actually an expression pedal that can control any user-selected parameter. Should be out in April at about $199. Stay tuned for the IK Stealth Toaster™, an audio interface encased in a 4-slice toaster. Ok, not really.

Now how much would you pay?!?

post by Mitchell Sigman Ok, so Pro Tools 8 is here, as in really really here. I'm not one for the mad hyperbole, but this is a pretty sweet deal. You, the nice customer, order Pro Tools M-Powered 7.4 for $249 and get: -  a free download of ProTools (methinks someone's trying to move some extra PT 7.4 boxes 'n' CD's). - an M-Audio Fast Track M-Powered interface for free free free. That's right, buy the software, get an audio interface! (disclamer: the Fast Track interfaces are B-stock units, but they're warrantied and we promise they aren't messed up- usually just a box that got opened) - we also toss in a Secrets of the Pros Pro Tools DVD Volume One and Wizoo Pro Tools book to help get you up and running with the whole shebang. See how nice we are?

um... pretty colors!

post by mixmaster Mitchell Sigman Just got word on the release of the Alesis Master Control audio interface/control surface (or as Alesis' press states: ALL-IN-ONE AUDIO INTERFACE, CONTROL SURFACE AND AUDIO MONITORING SOLUTION). Regardless, it's a pretty neat box. Maybe it's just because it reminds of a vintage ARP Quadra, a hokey oddball of a synth if there ever was one, but it sure looks cool: Getting back to the topic at hand, the Alesis Master Control gives you eight analog ins (in the form of two XLR mic ins and six TRS line ins) six analog TRS outs, stereo SP/DIF I/O, and two ADAT lightpipe ins for total of 26 simultaneous inputs if ya got the A/D horsepower, interfaced to the computer via Firewire. They also toss in nine motorized touch-sensitive faders, eight endless-rotary knobs and two banks of eight (uh, that'd be 16) assignable function buttons. And a talkback mic. Its HUI-compatible (for the PT crowd) and Mackie Control-compatible (for the Logic, DP, Live, Cubase, Sonar, i.e. they who don't use the Pro Tools). Roughly speaking, it's like having a Mackie Control with a built-in audio interface. With pretty colors :>) Coming soon to audioMIDI.
