SoundToys Decapitator

High-end supermangler plug-in maker SoundToys was showing Depitator, a gourmet saturation plug. In their own words: "Decapitator is the sound of great analog gear and the ability to push it way too far." Sounds good to me. Shipping very soon, price TBA. Available in Native and TDM formats, Mac/Windows.

Turn it up to, well... Digidesign Eleven Rack

In the "really?" category, Digidesign has just dropped Eleven Rack, which basically takes their Eleven guitar modeling plug in and puts it in a Pod Pro-esque two-space rack case incorporating a 2-in/2-out Pro Tools LE-compatible USB audio interface and a front panel XLR mic in with phantom power.

There's just ten amp models, seven cabs, seven mics and 16 effects, but for me, that's fine (I use exactly three amp models of the roughly 497 models on my Line 6 Flextone, and I suspect most serious musicians are the same). The other nice thing is that the presets actually sound like amps, as opposed to the mega-effected swooshathon so commonly experienced in rack boxes of this ilk. I'm as picky as they come, and I was ready to hate it, but it really does sound great. Additional, it allows you to record dry guitar and amp tones simultaneously in case you're into the reamping thing. This could be really cool if you want play like you would through an amp, then pipe it out to a real mic'd amp setup at a later date.

Nice job guys... we should have a review up next week. In the meantime, check it out.

Bust the science, T-Pain-style.

The ubiquitous Antares AutoTune is such a kinda-like-a-phenomenon of pop culture that PBS series NOVA ScienceNOW is featuring AutoTune in a segment airing tonight (6/30) at 9:PM (check local listings in case you live someplace where time is like, three minutes off). You can see a sneak peek HERE.

super crazy OverloudBreverb aM Edition deal.

Here's the deal... our friends from Overloud have made us a special "lite" version of their killer alogrithmic reverb plug-in Breverb (PC/Mac, RTAS, VST/AU). It's fully functional and features Breverb's room and plate algorithims AND it's merely FIVE BUCKS (normal full version price: $369!). Why would we/Overloud do such a silly thing? Because we're gamblin' men, and we figure once you use Breverb aM Edition you'll want the full blast, all singin', all dancin' four algorithim version. Which, because so very nice, we'll hook you up with for $249 if you get the upgrade within 30 days of purchase ($289 after 30 days). We're always thinking of you, friend. Clickee HERE for all's the shizzle.

(the fine print, yo: it's one of them serial number download deals, and can take 1-2 days for order processing, so please take pity on our poor overworked sales dept who have been deluged with orders for Breverb aM Edition)

MOTU Volta. Nothing to do with Mars.

Being the hard-nosed vintage analog synth curmudgeon I am, there isn't much in the software realm that really blows me out of my seat. But if you own CV/gate vintage (or modern) synths, MOTU Volta looks to be a must-have. Volta functions like a standard AU plug-in, but instead of making any actual sound, the signals it outputs through an audio interface are control voltages and gates that are plugged into analog synthesizers. In its most basic form, this offers "extra" LFO's, envelopes, triggers and clocks; up to 24 of them dependent upon the physical number of available audio interface outputs. The only catch is that your audio interface must have be able to pass DC voltages (the audio equivalent of playing back a 0Hz signal)- some interfaces can and some can't. This is a bit of a dangling question mark presently, but which ones do and don't will surely become public knowledge pretty rapidly. Here's some other neat things: -all the LFO's and clocks are easily syncable to host. This may not sound like a big deal to those accustomed to virtual instruments, but getting analog synths to sync properly to MIDI has always been a pain, so this is great. - Volta lets you use your host sequencer's automation facilities to draw CV automation. - "Calibration" mode for oscillator and filter tuning. Take the synth's output and Volta analyze pitch and compensates for automated tuning and scaling- very handy for older synths with questionable tuning. My understanding is that calibration mode works on filters too allowing accurate scaling of resonating filters for use as sine wave oscillators. Shipping next week! 5/1/09: Update... in-stock at ye audioMIDI.com

NAMM '09- More coolness from MOTU with Volta

This is a really weird and cool one... MOTU is working on Volta, a new AU plug-in that allows DAWs to output CV's for control of vintage analog synth gear via the audio outputs of a MOTU interface. Wild, huh? They tell me it may work with other plug-in formats and audio interfaces as well. Should be out first quarter, price TBA.
